Lignocellulosic biomass, such as agricultural and forestry residues & herbaceous energy crops can serve as low cost feedstocks for production of fuel ethanol & other value-added commodity chemicals. The technology of bio-refinery is based on pressure hydrolysis, which breaks down the lignocellulose biomass into hydrolytic hydrocarbons (glucose) and a solid lignocellulose phase. Fural & a mixture of acids are separated from the vapour phase of the hydrolysis, and lignin is extracted from the solid phase & further processed. The raw material like waste straw or energy plants, such as feed sorrel, millet, wood chips and others is decayed into hydrolysed sugars (glucose) & the solid phase. The hydrolytic hydrocarbon (sugar) solution is transferred to enzymatic hydrolysis of a starchy material (corn grain), where its heat energy is utilised. The sugar solution is then fermented and ethanol is distilled from it. For example, from one ton of straw it is possible to acquire 250 l of ethanol and 70 Kg of furfural. At the same time we can produce also 90 Kg of lignin or 500 Kg of peletized fuel.

Mass Spectrometry Facility assists researchers in experiments in which the accurate measurements of mass are important. The variety of services include peptide mapping, measurement of adduct formation on proteins & DNA, mass of mutant proteins, fidelity of recombinant proteins, peptide identification during the purification of synthetic peptides, identification of drugs & their metabolites, oxygen 18 & oxygen 16 isotope exchange experiments, identification of invivo & invitro phosphorylation sites, and protein processing. We can use the mass information of the peptides of a proteolytic digest to identify a protein from the databases. Tandem mass spectrometry is used to partially microsequence peptides using samples that cannot be obtained in sufficient quantities for Edman degradation sequencing methods. These approaches are important to current investigations of gene regulation, signal transduction and gene identification. Services provided include peptide sequencing and biomarker discovery.

Medical Device Testing Services include, determination of bioburden before sterilization, method development & validation, determination of bacterial count on the product before sterilization, sterility testing according to USP & EP of products & biological indicators, test for endotoxins, test for ethylene oxide residue according to DIN EN ISO 10993-7, hygiene monitoring for the qualification and control of production zones, implantation test (muscular, peritoneal, ocular, intraosseous), cytotoxicity testing & biocompatibility according to EN ISO. Histology Services provides histological services to both the research and biotechnology community. It should have facilities to process both animal and plant tissues for paraffin, frozen or plastic sectioning. It should also provide special histological stainings, as well as immunohistochemistry and antibody testing services. It has to be actively involved with the clients in developing experimental methods which would provide them better answers to their experimental problems. The microscopes may be equipped with digital cameras allowing more processing ability and easy image collection. Services of pathologists can be provided as requested by the client.
