Transmission electron tomography is an increasingly common three-dimensional electron microscopy approach that can provide new insights into the structure of subcellular components. Transmission electron tomography fills the gap between high resolution structural methods (X-ray diffraction or nuclear magnetic resonance) and optical microscopy. New software for transmission electron tomography has been developed called TomoJ. TomoJ is a plug-in for the now standard image analysis & processing software for optical microscopy, ImageJ. TomoJ provides a user-friendly interface for alignment, reconstruction and a combination of multiple tomographic volumes & includes the most recent algorithms for volume reconstructions used in three-dimensional electron microscopy (the algebraic reconstruction technique & simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique), as well as the commonly used approach of weighted back-projection. The software presented is specifically designed for electron tomography. It has been written in Java as a plug-in for ImageJ and is distributed as freeware.

The process of data mining is concerned with extracting patterns from the data by using techniques such as classification, regression, link analysis, segmentation or deviation detection. Classification involves mapping data into one of several predefined or newly discovered classes. Regression methods involve assigning data a continuous numerical variable based on statistical methods. One goal in using regression methods is to extrapolate trends from a few samples of the data. Link analysis involves evaluating apparent connections or links between data in the database. Deviation detection identifies data values that are outside of the norm, as defined by existing models or by evaluating the ordering of observations. Segmentation identifies classes or groups of data that behave similarly, according to an established metric. These methods of data mining are typically used in combination with each other, either in parallel or as part of a sequential operation.

Load cells work like calibrated springs and can be used for measuring forces or for weighing systems. A force is applied and there is a flexion, there is a Wheatstone bridge with strain gauges that measure this mechanical flexion thence giving a proportional electrical signal.
